CHEESE MUSEUM KOBARID

A MILLENNIAL-YEAR TRADITION OF CHEESE MAKING IN THE SOČA VALLEY

The Posočje is characterized by the millennial tradition and heritage of mountain pasture and cheese-making. The first mention of the mountains is already evident in written sources from the 12th and 13th centuries. Today’s Mlekarna Planika was created based on this heritage and preserved tradition. Therefore, in the dairy, we decided, together with the Tolmin Museum, to set up a historical and ethnological collection OD PLANINE DO PLANIKE, where we present this heritage to various groups of visitors, our customers, schoolchildren, and excursionists. During summer, this vibrant tradition can be seen in the mountains of the Soča Valley, but many are not given to go there, or there is no time for it. So they can visit the museum instead. We note that domestic and foreign tourists, who are increasingly visiting the Soča valley, are becoming more and more interested in local tradition and local food.

GUIDED TOUR OF THE MUSEUM OD PLANINE DO PLANIKE

All visitors are professionally guided in the museum. Through the museum, we would like to present mountain pastures and cheese making in the Soča Valley to the general public. The tradition on the surrounding mountains is still alive. Mountain pastures are mostly located in the hills of the Soča valley, above 1,000 meters above sea level. In the museum, visitors can also see an old cheese making facility with fire under a caldron and an archival cellar, where the matured Tolminc cheeses ripen. Visitors can also see a mountain lodge with all the necessary equipment for processing of milk into cheese, which has been and is still used in the mountains of the Soča Valley.

HISTORICAL ETHNOLOGIC COLLECTION

The historical ethnological collection was created under the professional guidance of the Tolmin Museum. The history of cheese making from hard beginnings to the present day is presented on the panels. Apart from the mountain cheese-making lodge, the central part of the collection, which is a short film, through which visitors can get a clear view of the work and life in the mountains, is very interesting. The mountain settlements are very typical in the Soča Valley and different from those in Bohinj. Old cheese-making tools, accessories, and objects used by dairy farmers on the pastures in the past, and some to this day, have been exhibited.

KEEPING TRADITION AND OLD RECIPES

By visiting the museum, we would like to present to our visitors the present processing of milk into cheeses and other dairy products in today’s Mlekarna Planika, where we take into account old recipes and the tradition of our ancestors.
